‘So here’s the dilemma” Stephen Jenkinson addresses his audience in the documentary ‘Griefwalker’; ‘The old scheme of pain and symptom-management was going to be the magic bullet, meaning people will be able to die well. The consequences being what? People are dying and their pain is well managed; their symptoms are definitely under control; and what is it you see in their eyes when they are dying?
Next in the documentary we see people in the audience watching Stephen expectantly; waiting for the dilemma to unfold. While watching through the window of my computer, I catch myself doing the same; wondering what the dilemma is. For isn’t “dying well” exactly what we expect from dying these days? Free of pain and yet still present. So we can have a proper and well-contained goodbye? Is there more? Am I missing something? As it turns out I do…
I’ll tell you what I see. Stephen continues; In the eyes of people dying I see a wretched anxiety and a completely overwhelming, almost toxic fearfulness.
When you ask people: ‘What are you most afraid of happening when you die; 8 out of 10 people will say ‘pain and suffering’. I don’t want it to hurt. So we say, no problem we can get you there; you’ll be pain free and you’ll still be sort of present, that’s the promise.
And you know what? That’s the hell’; because they’re still sort of present and their pain is well controlled and the magic bullet turned out not to slay the Dragon after all; because they were wrong about what they were afraid of most.
To die, I realise is like going through childbirth; or having to cope with a debilitating illness; or being traumatized; you-do-not-know-what-it-is-like-until-you’re-there. And even then it can end in a million different ways in an experience as personal as your fingerprint.
And yet, especially in the westernized societies, many live as if death is something that happens only to others.
